Deforestation is currently the biggest environmental problem we are faced with. Despite the efforts of various organizations and individuals, the world forest has shrunk by 3% (compared to 2009). It is up to us – it’s us who consume the wood products. There is nothing wrong with sustainable forestry, though. In North America and Europe there are certification systems that are awarded to companies who harvest timber in a sustainable way. The trick is not to buy any timber material or furniture that doesn’t have certification. This is the only way we can stop violent cutting of rainforest in South America, China, India and other regions. Scandinavian countries are known for the best practice of forestry. You will do a good thing for the planet if you buy certified wood from a local source or as close as possible in Europe.
